pro-Forms™ in action : GPS enabled tree survey for Local Authorities

A South Midlands based Borough Council identified the need to be more efficient in surveying and recording tree information across the Borough but unfortunately without the opportunity to invest in costly new hardware or software.

Being acutely aware of the onerous legal responsibilities and duty of care provisions arising from legislation such as Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Occupiers' Liability Act 1999 and the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000(CRoW) the Authority had already developed in-house an SQL database for storing  its' tree asset information but to become more efficient needed to collect this information via mobile devices which could exchange data directly with the backend SQL database.

Being an existing BlackBerry and pro-Forms™ customer the answer became obvious - to extend the License and expand the use pro-Forms™ from it's current mobilisation of Building Control to include the tree survey aspects of the the arboricultural service.

Thanks to the pro-Forms™ toolkit  a comprehensive survey form was developed in-house in a very short time scale to run on BlackBerry Bold 9700 devices over the Vodafone GPRS data network.

Using just the one BlackBerry device tree inspectors can now collect rich asset information including photographs, accurate GPS location and voice notes with minimal time and administration being required to add them to the back office database.

A major feature of the pro-Forms™ toolkit is the custom data format tool which allows the definition of export file structures and destinations meaning for example that as tree surveys are submitted pre-defined elements of information such as longitude and lattitude can be automatically formatted and sent to existing back office systems such as GIS software.

In summary the benefits of this solution include :

  • cost effective mobilisation of an existing service area
  • minimal investment required in mobile technology
  • high levels of functionality and flexibility from pro-Forms™ toolkit future proofing the solution
  • high productivity gains for tree inspectors increasing the rate at which surveys are completed
  • reduced exposure to risk for the Local Authority and duty of care holders.
